Soap Adds Lightning Payments Through Voltage

By Soap Team•

Payment companies grow by giving merchants more ways to serve their customers. The difficulty is doing that without adding another system to manage.

Soap has added Lightning payments through Voltage to change that equation. Merchants can now enable a Lightning payment option through the Soap checkout experience, while Voltage Payments handles the infrastructure behind it.

The result is a practical model for payment platforms: add an open, interoperable payment rail without asking every merchant to build or operate Lightning infrastructure.

Merchant demand without another infrastructure project

Soap provides a unified platform for checkout, payment methods, acquiring, and related payment operations. Its merchants had been asking for access to payment experiences such as Cash App, but sending each merchant through another direct provider relationship would add onboarding and compliance friction.

By integrating Voltage once at the platform level, Soap can offer Lightning as an opt-in payment method within its existing product. Merchants gain another way to serve customers while continuing to work through the platform and processes they already use.

This is the real value of embedded Lightning: the payment rail expands, while the merchant experience stays coherent.

How the Soap payment experience works

When a customer selects Lightning in Soap checkout, Soap generates a Lightning invoice, shown as a QR code or a tappable deep link, depending on the device.

The customer completes the payment with a compatible Lightning-enabled wallet or app. Soap manages the checkout and merchant workflow, while Voltage Payments supports payment processing and settlement over the Lightning Network.

Lightning remains behind the experience, where infrastructure belongs. Merchants do not need to operate nodes, manage channels, or build the payment backend themselves.

Why open-network interoperability matters

Because Lightning is an open payment network, an invoice is not limited to one closed wallet or provider. Compatible wallets and apps can complete the payment without a bespoke integration between every participant.

Cash App's Bitcoin Payments with USD is one public example of that interoperability. Eligible Cash App customers can scan a Lightning QR code and fund the payment from their USD Cash balance without needing to hold or spend bitcoin.

Cash App is not a party to the Soap and Voltage integration. Its product illustrates the broader opportunity created by an open network: payment platforms can accept Lightning, while customers choose a compatible experience that works for them.

What Voltage Payments gives payment platforms

Integrating a payment method is only the visible part of launching it. Production payments also require reliable APIs, liquidity management, operational support, and infrastructure that can scale with transaction volume.

Voltage Payments gives platforms the infrastructure to send and receive over Lightning without assembling and operating the full backend stack in-house. Soap keeps control of its merchant relationships and checkout experience, while Voltage handles the specialized Lightning layer underneath.

That division of responsibility helps payment companies move faster and gives merchants a simpler path to adoption.

A repeatable model for embedded Lightning

Soap's launch demonstrates how Lightning can fit inside an established payments product. It does not need to become a separate destination or a technical project for every merchant. It can become another payment option inside the checkout, dashboard, and support experience a platform already provides.

For payment companies, fintechs, and merchants evaluating Lightning, that is the larger takeaway: integrate the network once, preserve the customer experience, and let interoperability expand the ways people can pay.

Soap and Voltage will continue developing educational content and sharing what they learn as merchants begin using the new payment option.
