Soap Launches Lightning Payments: How Eligible Cash App Customers Can Pay
Your customers want familiar ways to pay. Your business needs a checkout that is fast, reliable, and easy to manage. Adding another payment option should make both possible.
That's why we're bringing Lightning payments to Soap through our integration with Voltage. Lightning gives your customers another way to pay within the Soap checkout experience, using compatible wallets and apps over a network designed to move bitcoin in seconds with very low network fees.
Customers may not even need to own bitcoin. With Cash App's Bitcoin Payments with USD, eligible customers can scan a Lightning QR code and fund the payment from their USD balance. It's one example of how Lightning connects familiar payment experiences through an open network. Here's what that means for your business.
What is Lightning?
Lightning is a payment network built on Bitcoin. It lets compatible wallets and apps send bitcoin to one another without recording each individual payment directly on the Bitcoin blockchain.
For a customer at checkout, the difference is practical: Lightning payments can complete in seconds, without waiting for a new block confirmation. Lightning Labs' overview explains how the network enables near-instant, low-cost settlement.
You don't need to understand the underlying technology to offer it through Soap. We manage the checkout and merchant experience, while Voltage provides the Lightning infrastructure behind the payment.
Why it matters for merchants
Speed matters when a customer is ready to buy. A payment method that completes quickly helps keep your checkout moving. Lightning also operates around the clock, making it useful for businesses whose customers aren't shopping on a bank's schedule.
Network fees are typically very low and can be near zero. That creates opportunities for smaller purchases where payment costs matter. Network fees are only one part of the total cost, though: your Soap pricing and any applicable conversion or service charges still matter.
There's also more choice. Lightning is an open network, so customers can pay from compatible wallets and apps. Your business can add a payment option while continuing to manage checkouts through Soap.
Your customers don't need to own bitcoin to pay over Lightning
Cash App's Bitcoin Payments with USD is a useful example of how this works. Eligible customers can scan a Lightning QR code, select US Dollars, and pay using their Cash USD balance. They don't need to buy or hold bitcoin first.
The customer chooses dollars as their funding source; the payment travels over Lightning. That makes the network useful to people who want a familiar payment experience as well as those who already use bitcoin.
This is open-network compatibility. Cash App is not a party to the Soap and Voltage integration, and feature availability depends on Cash App's eligibility requirements.
A customer paying from a dollar balance also doesn't automatically mean the merchant receives dollars. The customer's funding source and your business's settlement arrangement are separate. Our team can walk you through the settlement options available to your account.
What the checkout will look like
Once Lightning is enabled for your business, the payment flow will be straightforward:
- The customer selects Lightning in Soap checkout.
- Soap generates a Lightning invoice, a payment request shown as a QR code or a tappable link, depending on the device.
- The customer opens a compatible wallet or app, reviews the payment, and confirms it. Eligible Cash App customers scanning the QR code can choose to fund it with USD.
- The payment completes over Lightning, with Soap managing the checkout experience and Voltage supporting the payment infrastructure.
The customer decides how to pay. Your team continues working through Soap, without having to operate Lightning nodes or manage payment channels.
More ways to get paid, with less operational work
Our merchants have asked for payment experiences such as Cash App. Sending every merchant through another direct provider onboarding process adds work. Integrating Lightning at the Soap platform level gives us a way to support compatible payment experiences through the product you already use. Voltage's 2026 iGaming Payments Benchmark Report looks at how operators are reaching Cash App customers, and what it means for their payment costs.
This follows the direction we outlined in our February product update: helping merchants and payment partners grow without adding unnecessary operational complexity. Lightning extends that approach to another payment network, with Voltage handling the specialized infrastructure.
For your business, the opportunity is simple: give customers another way to complete a purchase, with fast payments and low network costs, while keeping your payment operations manageable.
